I used to pay 55$/month plus tax for 100 GB with Virgin Plus. It was a Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) plan since I’ve had my Samsung Galaxy S20 for about five years. The thing is, I don’t need 100 GB of data. I don’t have social media, so I only need data for the GPS, email, and the odd internet search. My monthly usage hovered between 3 and 8 GB without any effort to restrict my usage.
I’ve been on the lookout for cheaper plans with Virgin for a bout a year without luck. I didn’t mind getting less data, but I wanted to lower my monthly bill. It just happened that I had an hour to kill at a mall this week before meeting up with a friend. I headed to the Virgin booth to see if they could offer me better deals in person. Alas, they were not able to offer me anything appealing. All the deals were for new customers, and they did nothing to retain their loyal customers. I was with Virgin for 8 years.
So I headed to the Fido store because my wife, Kayla, is with them and is satisfied. Fido is owned by Rogers and uses the same towers, but it’s usually cheaper than its parent company. It turns out they could offer me 25$/month for 10 GB by adding a line under Kayla’s account. I would cut my monthly bill is more than half! You may think that saving 30$/month is nothing. However, as you can see below, investing this 30$ every month until I die is a 300K difference!
Another reason I went with Fido is that I already own and like the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard. I stumbled on this card while watching this video. You can read about my credit card system here.

Getting 2% cashback on everything is great for a free card. It’s also cool that you can 1.5X your cashback by redeeming it for Rogers, Fido or Shaw purchases. I plan to use my cashback to pay our phone bills. I can also accumulate it for buying a new phone when my S20 dies.

Here’s how I use my four-card portfolio. I plan on adding the new Wealthsimple credit card to my portfolio to save on FX fees when I travel.
